Avoyelles Parish Schools to Launch JROTC Program
Avoyelles Parish Schools are proud to announce the launch of a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program, providing students with a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, self-discipline, and community service experience. The program is set to begin in the upcoming school year, marking an exciting expansion in educational offerings for students.
What is JROTC?
JROTC is a nationwide program sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces and integrated into high schools across the country. Its mission is "to motivate young people to be better citizens." Unlike traditional military training, JROTC focuses on character education, leadership skills, physical fitness, and community involvement. Students participate in activities that teach teamwork, responsibility, and the importance of civic duty.
Benefits of JROTC
The benefits of joining JROTC go far beyond the classroom. Students in the program gain:
Leadership Skills: Learn how to lead with confidence and integrity.
Teamwork: Develop the ability to work effectively with others.
Patriotism: Understand the value of service to the community and the nation.
Fitness: Improve physical health and build endurance.
Career Opportunities: Explore pathways in both military and civilian careers.
Scholarships: Qualify for college scholarships exclusive to JROTC participants.
Discipline: Learn self-control, time management, and responsibility.
Impact on Avoyelles Parish Schools
JROTC programs are known to have a positive impact on schools and communities. According to the U.S. Army JROTC, schools with this program experience:
Better student attendance and higher graduation rates.
Enhanced school recognition and community involvement.
Increased student success after graduation.
A safe, disciplined learning environment.
Faculty members also see benefits, as JROTC motivates students to perform well in all classes, complements other classroom instruction, and helps reduce discipline issues.
Dexter Compon, Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, shared, “I’m very excited for our students to have another opportunity that will help develop and prepare them forfuture success. This has been several years in the making, and it's wonderful to see it come to fruition. “
Looking Forward
The addition of JROTC in Avoyelles Parish reflects a commitment to expanding educational opportunities while instilling lifelong skills that prepare students for success, whether they choose a path in military service, higher education, or the workforce.
Students from any of the four Avoyelles Parish School District high schools are eligible to participate in the JROTC program. To ensure accessibility for all students, transportation will be provided.
In addition, there will be a two-day summer camp for students to experience a taste of what JROTC has to offer without any commitment to the program:
Day 1 (June 17): Students will visit LSUA, where they will participate in STEM activities in a structured, hands-on environment.
Day 2 (June 18): Students will travel to the Training Center (Camp Beauregard) in Pineville to experience the obstacle course, rappel tower, and leader reaction course.
